Mr. Chicken left for Urbana this morning, and I admit feeling a wee bit bereft. We’ve had a lovely vacation together, and we don’t often get to spend this kind of time as a family.
Mornings here have been especially sweet. Mr. Chicken would go gather The Poo when she began to murmur in her crib, bringing her to our room so she wouldn’t wake her cousins.
We’d snuggle together in the luxuriously large bed, talking softly and laughing at The Poo’s pronouncements.
Today it was just me and The Poo, who woke at 5 a.m. but quickly fell back asleep in my arms.
Her daddy snuck downstairs at 6:45 a.m. to make the 13-hour drive to his first destination, Columbus, OH. He’ll spend the night with his step-brother, then make his way to our home on the prairie tomorrow.
I’ll stay on here for eight more days, before flying out of Boston next Wednesday. But there were bills to pay and projects due back home, so The Poo and I are on our own here for the next week and a half.
When the girl finally woke at 9 a.m., she rolled over and asked for her daddy. I told her he went home to Urbana, and that we’d see him soon.
“I wanna go to Mybana,” she said, employing one of my favorite malapropisms – she thinks we’re saying Your Bana. “I wanna get cozy in my house under the blankets and watch my big TV.”
As much as I hate living there, the indisputable fact is that Urbana is The Poo’s home. It’s where she feels comfortable, where her toys and her friends are. It is where her life is.
My life is hers, and so I, too, call Urbana my home.
