Photographic Proof That I Am Completely Off My Rocker

by Mrs. Chicken on October 20, 2007

150_thumb.jpgAnyone who knows me at all in real life will understand just what this photograph means.

This is a Bernina 150 sewing machine.

One of which I will recieve via UPS in about five to seven business days, along with a gift card for a machine tune-up (??) and sewing lessons.

Remember how I’m all, “yeah, I hate crafting, I’m a crappy crafter, hey, dudes, I am like, TOTALLY craft-i-capped?”

Well, the weirdest part of this whole sewing-machine incident is that I asked my mom to send it to me. It’s one of her old machines, and I’ve had an itch to try my hand at using one.

Why, you may rightly ask?

Because I recently picked up this new hobby:
My First Attempt

Hand embroidery.

It is so much fun. And the projects take me only a couple days. Tea towels, little aprons, jumpers for The Poo, pillowcases for my niece and nephew … like I needed another obsessive hobby. Isn’t it bad enough that I blog every damn day?

But how can I resist with such cool, hip designs from Sublime Stitching, or as I like to call it, “the place where I send all my money via PayPal.”

So now I’ve got all these little pieces of embroidered fabric, and I think I actually … gulp … would enjoy … oh god … making a pillow.

Maybe my crazy is getting out of hand.

I’ll let you know how it goes. I’m not as crafty as my sister, but I think I should be able to avoid sewing through my own finger like she did once.

You go, girl!

Ooh, I’d love to see some of your creations.

I have a sewing machine, but have hardly had time since having kids.

I’m great at curtains! I can make a good totel bag, too.

My mom is the excellent seamstress in the family, though.

You let me know how it’s going with those fingers, m’kay?

Mrs. Chicken October 20, 2007 at 8:25 am

You know I had to say that, right? :)

I made a halloween flag, once. It didn’t hurt nearly as much as I thought it would.

I love it! And I’m jealous. I’ve had a hankerin to learn to sew lately too and even bought angry chicken’s new book, but I don’t have a machine yet. I am not even remotely craftily inclined either, but all these awesome crafting blogs have been inspiring. Good for you girl!

Did you make that little teapot? Ooooh!

How cool-trying your hand at this. :) We all await your results.

I knit-not so much for the finished product, but the process. Very Zen and mediative. Plus I like having something to do with my hands while I watch TV.

I’m asking for a sewing machine for Xmas, so you aren’t alone in your insanity.

Fun! I’ve never tried hand-embroidery. (I sew, quilt, crochet, and cross-stitch, though.)

Would *love* to see the jumper you made for the Poo! Please!?

Oh my GOD I LOVE YOU!!!!!

No seriously, I embroider too and now I am so like….freaking out happy to know I am not the only one!

One of my closest friends hauled out her mother-in-law’s old sewing machine a few years ago and now her house is full of AWESOME drapes and other handmade beauties of which I am extremely envious.

I say “envious” rather than “jealous” because I borrowed a sewing machine and made my own window coverings a few years back and they, how did you put that again? Oh yeah: they sucked the donkey.

Have fun!

Wow, what an undertaking! Good luck with the fingers!

maggie October 20, 2007 at 9:42 pm

Sweet. I wish I had the time to be more crafty.

Isn’t embroidery fun? I love the way it looks, each stitch done with patience and care. The focus it takes is relaxing too.

Sewing is really easy once you get the hang of it. Have someone show you how to thread it, start with straight lines (pillows, curtains, totes, etc) and go from there.

Our social worker (our champion on the adoption journey) smiled sweetly when my other half proudly boasted about the decorating and preparation we had done.

She referred to our efforts as “nesting”.

Perhaps the whole craft thing is part of it – making – providing for… doing it yourself.

As someone who fears craft stores, I understand the shock you understandably are feeling. But hey, go for it.

I dare you.

Crystal D October 22, 2007 at 9:30 am

hmmm, I am not very “crafty” but this seems like just the thing I need to keep snacks out of my hands in the evenings while watching TV. I just ordered a starter kit.

Redneck Mommy October 22, 2007 at 1:31 pm

I embroider. And I crochet.

But I refuse to use the EIGHT THOUSAND dollar sewing machine my mother gave me because she bought a new one. At twice the price.

So it sits there, collecting dust and mocking me.

But I’d rather sew my fingers than wrangle with a paper pattern…

aimee/greeblemonkey October 22, 2007 at 9:11 pm

Here’s the thing – my hubs is DYING to learn how to sew. Maybe you can teach?

andi October 22, 2007 at 11:04 pm

I’ve been wanting to learn how to sew, which is odd because I’m not domestic at all. I do suffer from an incredible addiction to the Craft Blog, though, even though I do almost no crafting. Strange, yes?

tori October 23, 2007 at 10:54 am

I LOVE Sublime Stitching! I have been going crazy making towels and embroidering everything that I can think of.

I really want to learn how to sew, but I am notorious for breaking sewing machines.

Damselfly October 23, 2007 at 1:31 pm

Wow, you’re great! I couldn’t do that hand stitching.

Mrs. Mustard October 24, 2007 at 7:16 pm

I could have sent your my machine! I got it as a gift and suck hardcore at it. It takes me over an hour to hem a pair of pants!

Kristi October 24, 2007 at 8:23 pm

You so don’t want to see my attempts at hand-embroidery. Think ‘retarded monkey with a needle’ and you’ll get the idea…

Great read, I’ve added you to my Chrome bookmarks.
