I still think about the girls, their long auburn braids swinging as they ran through the schoolyard to meet me.

We’d hold hands and talk about their day, my love for them growing steadily and reluctantly, all warm kisses and sticky, needy hearts. Their palms in my own brought to mind far-away days with my own mother, now these two months in the ground.

His muse, staring out at me with vivacious green eyes, a hint of malice around the brows.

They covered the walls within which he walked, silent.

Another great case of less is more.

I often think of that piece of “flash fiction” Hemingway wrote. In six words, he broke my heart:

“For Sale: Baby shoes, never worn.”
