Playing Hooky

by Mrs. Chicken on January 29, 2008

The Poo wound up in my bed again last night, and we slept the night through wrapped around one another. I finally rolled over this morning and groggily opened my eyes, taking in dark sky and gloom of the bedroom.

Looking at the clock, I expected to see a number like six or seven.

Instead, I jerked upright in amazement – it was 8:45 a.m., exactly the time we should have been in the car on the way to school.

I half-heartedly tried to rouse The Poo, thinking we could call and say we’d be late. But she stubbornly slept on. Even Mr. C was still asleep, and normally he bolts out the door at 7:30.

We lay in bed, the three of us, snuggling and wrapped in blankets. The Poo finally woke at 9, pointing silently to her open mouth.

“What is it, Poo?” I asked.

“Food,” she replied groggily.

Rather than rush her out the door, I called her teacher to say we wouldn’t be there today. It is so dark and rainy, really a perfect morning to do nothing. I have a new sewing machine waiting to be opened, and my sister planted a notion in my head yesterday, when she told me she and her daughter made chocolate-cake cookies.

So we’ll stay home and bake, maybe even do a variation of the craft I wrote about today at GNMParents. After lunch I’m babysitting for a friend, so we’ll make our way across town after mac n’ cheese and some soup for me.

I’m learning to slow down, to savor our days. And sometimes, playing a little hooky ain’t such a bad thing.

“Food.”

I wish that I could just point to my mouth like that at dinner time.

That sounds like a great idea!

And the older she gets, the more fun it it will be to play hooky with her. It’s a beautiful thing.

Ours was planned and we carried the boys to school but me and hubs are playing hooky this morning. I guess I’ll have to go to the daycare later this afternoon but for now…awwww peace and quiet. I’m off to nap already since my kids didn’t sleep as late as the Poo

Got to love Hooky days. Spending the day just sleeping and laying around and enjoying the company of family!

Have a super day!

BTW, I noticed your glass… seems fuller, or is it just me?

Leeanthro January 29, 2008 at 12:12 pm

My idea of playing hooky would be to send the kids to Grandma’s and call into work. I would love 8 hours at home alone!

LifeAsIKnowIt January 29, 2008 at 12:25 pm

Enjoy it! Pretty soon it will get harder to play hooky from school.

Ah, I love lazy mornings. Especially in the winter!

Jenny January 29, 2008 at 12:35 pm

Savor the days. Amen!

Gretchen January 29, 2008 at 12:48 pm

Some days, you just have to do it. You all needed the rest!

I think I need me some hooky!

Defiantmuse January 29, 2008 at 1:33 pm

Oh, how much fun!! That sounds like a wonderful day. I look forward to those days. And sleepin’ in until 9am! Wow…that sounds like a little slice of heaven.

I wish we had done that today.

I hope you have enjoyed your day of hooky! My guys got a 2 hour delay this morning and didn’t want to go to school until the bus showed up! I was trying to get them to play hooky with me but they didn’t want a part of it!

I think that days where we forget about schedules and commitments and just lay around and, well, do nothing are the best!

I’m glad you had one of those mornings!

Lisa Milton January 29, 2008 at 5:58 pm

You all deserve it. It’s been a rough couple months.

Rest; the world can wait.

Chicky January 29, 2008 at 6:27 pm

Sounds perfect to me.

Fern January 29, 2008 at 8:30 pm

I love days like that. I hope the whole day was as awesome as the morning.

Jordan January 29, 2008 at 9:31 pm

Nothing beats playing hooky. Sigh.

Carrie January 30, 2008 at 10:54 am

Playing hooky is so underrated. I wish it wasn’t such a big deal once they were in elementary school, because even though they drive me nuts, I’d keep them home for days like these!

Candy January 30, 2008 at 11:14 am

Playing hooky is seldom a bad thing. I let my kids do it at least twice a year, but only when they deserve it. If they’re being ass-hats, they get no such privileges.

How luxurious. Excellent decision.

Jonathan February 9, 2008 at 5:15 am

I am slowing down today too. Except now I’m worried I can’t hear them… what are they up to…
