Dear BabyCenter – Please Kiss My Ass

by Mrs. Chicken on February 1, 2008

My appetite is all screwed up. I want to eat anything and everything, and then I want to throw it up.

Occasionally I do, like yesterday when I tossed my cookies all over the doormat after the highly vigorous activity of getting the mail.

I feel like I’m not getting any actual nutrition (*cough cough potato chips cough*) and so I went looking for some ideas for small, healthy meals or snacks that might appeal to me, preferably some with protein – I’m totally off meat right now.

I made the mistake of going to BabyCenter.

I know, I know. I should totally know better. These are the people who think that you should try to enjoy spontaneous outdoor fun when you take a 12-hour road trip with your toddler.

So, anyway, here is what they offer up as good snack ideas, and then they have the audacity to claim these are as good as or better-tasting than Twinkies or Pringles:

Sour cream? Really? Since when is sour cream a snack food?

Hey, BabyCenter – how about you bite my ass? Does that taste as good or better than junk food?

i think people do this shit just to make us feel bad. or vindicated. or something.

cathy February 1, 2008 at 10:01 pm

hummus? tofu with a little ginger and soy sauce? a peanut butter cookie? a plain garden burger? a smoothie?

I’m really sorry you’re having trouble with your tummy right now. I agree that getting some protein will help. I know it’s hard. I had some issues like that, too.

sour cream is snack food? wtf?

cathy February 1, 2008 at 10:03 pm

oh, and Baby Center can bite my ass, too. They contributed a lot of unnecessary alarm and worry to my pregnancy.

Heather February 1, 2008 at 10:24 pm

I think it’s interesting that they are suggesting eating peanut butter and other nuts as healthy when I’ve been told (and heard about the studies) that women shouldn’t eat tree nuts when pregnant or nursing.

I’m going to have a cookie or four if I want to. So there Babycenter!

Clink February 1, 2008 at 10:44 pm

Ohhh bad memories…I had the same reaction (to food) and BabyCenter when I was pregnant. I lived on watermelon and icepops…for 28 weeks.
For protein (Im veggie) toasted almonds.
Hope you are feeling better soon!

Tater and Tot February 1, 2008 at 10:59 pm

Oh yeah. I definately think “pizzazz” when I eat a little peanut butter.
Whatever.

Mahala February 1, 2008 at 11:26 pm

People who think sour cream is a snack, grew up in homes with crappy cooks. Or something.

Your Sister February 2, 2008 at 5:24 am

Cheese and crackers do not equal cheesecake.

Leeanthro February 2, 2008 at 7:00 am

During both pregnancies I wanted ruffles potato chips and french onion dip. I NEVER buy this stuff. Maybe I needed salt? With my daughter is was Ding Dongs and chocolate milk!

Who cares if it’s good for you. If you can keep it down, eat it.

Just Beachy February 2, 2008 at 7:26 am

I wouldn’t worry with “nutrition” until you get over the sickness. I lived off of cheese-its for the first 12 weeks. Whatever you can keep down will give you some energy.

becky February 2, 2008 at 9:14 am

I had morning sickness 24/7 for the first 6 months when I was pregnant with Sam! I only ate the foods that would stay down! And trail mix does not equal chocolate!Cooking for me was totally out of the question for me! I had neighbors cook for my kids! That is how bad it was!
After the sickness left me that is when I started eating better foods.
I hope that yours lets up real soon and not last as long as mine did!

Hetha February 2, 2008 at 9:18 am

I love it when you get sassy Mrs. C! No one can sling it quite like you and it always puts a big smile on my face.

After a morning of baby-snuggling, I was feeling a little bummed that I won’t be having more – a thought I rarely have. You just reminded me why. Ug. I was super sick both times.

Please file under advice you didn’t ask for: I found if I could keep a B6 down, I was less nauseated with Zack. Mind you, I still threw up for the entire pregnancy, but it took the edge off.

I hope you feel better. Now go find some Pringles…

andi February 2, 2008 at 10:31 am

I agree with your sister. That is the first thing I thought of.

And also? Peanut butter does not add much pizazz when your crazy ass cravings just want a cookie. I got hooked on sweets and Pepsi (mmm elixer of the gods) when pregnant with Arlo. Screw these silly lists – eat what you want (you know, within reason:)) and the baby will be just fine.

I had awful sickness with Moosie. The smell of cooking foods was torture. My cube at work was just across the way from the microwave where people would heat their lunch. OMG. I lived off of bannana popscicles. I couldn’t stand the smell of cooking eggs and would get sick instantly. Guess who was allergic to eggs? We didn’t figure it out until he was older than 1 and had hives after eating a cookie.

Good luck making it through!

Sour cream has served as both an ingredient and a snack food in our home for years. It is our preferred dip for chips of any kind. It’s especially nice with the stronger flavoured ones my kids like, such as nacho cheese corn chips. It also serves as the base for many dry dip mixes, which is why, I expect, it is listed with the snack items.

I think you need to eat what makes you feel the best (as in, not the worst). I always started out with good intentions toward snack foods when I was pregnant, but those didn’t get me very far. My husband made lots of late night potato chip (and yes, sour cream) runs.

Here’s another BabyCenter gem:

In addition, if you plan to have more children, each c-section you have increases your future risk of these complications as well as placenta previa and placenta accreta. That said, not all c-sections can — or should — be prevented. In some situations, a c-section is necessary for the well-being of the mother, the baby, or both.

Are these people for realz? Can and should be prevented. Like I really ASKED to grow six huge fibroids and have my guts removed to get the kid out.

ARRRRGGGGGHHH.

Amanda February 2, 2008 at 1:43 pm

So seriously, Jello sugar free dulce de leche pudding. 60 calories and the perfect “I wanna be bad, but I don’t wanna friggin’ deal with the guilt” 10pm cravings.

Fizz February 2, 2008 at 7:02 pm

Oh, Mrs. C… You’ve got me (well, both of us – Gruff was reading over my shoulder and had to read that line about “tossing your cookies” OUT LOUD) cracking up here. Sorry that you’re still off your appetite – but thanks for a funny take on it. BabyCenter, bite my ass… that’s going to be ringing in my head all day!

froglette79 February 2, 2008 at 8:01 pm

They are idiots. Idiots. Nothing tastes worse than the fake version of something when you are craving the real thing.

Graham crackers as a replacement for cookies? Who are they kidding? That doesn’t work on my kids, why would it work on me? And I can read the box.

MsPrufrock February 3, 2008 at 7:18 am

Pregnant or not, I hate those bloody charts telling the reader what tasteless crap you can substitute for the good stuff.

“Instead of pancakes swimming in butter and maple syrup, try a nice bowl of sugar-free muesli!” As if.

Eat away. Assuming you don’t eat your weight in pudding, you’ll be fine.

Emily February 3, 2008 at 8:47 am

Cheerios are one of my favorite pregnancy foods (you would never speak to me again if you knew how healthy my OTHER cravings are). Might they do the trick?

nomotherearth February 3, 2008 at 9:12 am

Since when is trail mix a replacement for chocolate?? That’s exactly why I ignored that chart.

I will say though, that if your tastes run to sugar cereals, the new All-Bran “Guardian” cereal (look for the big red heart on the box) is really good, and so is Kashi Organic Flakes and Berries.

Mrs. Mustard February 3, 2008 at 12:38 pm

Ok, so I will start by saying that fat-free and low-fat and reduced-sugar are NO GOOD while pregnant. I contend that they make you more grumpy and susceptible to barfing.
And how is putting sugar and cinnamon on cereal different than sugared cereal? Oh, unless they expect you to use a scant amount of sugar, but I say BAH to that!

andrea February 4, 2008 at 9:30 am

“Peanut butter for pizazz” is pretty funny because pb is probably the least pizazz-type food I can think of!

Aimee Greeblemonkey February 5, 2008 at 12:41 pm

Sour cream with onion soup and chips is a very GOOD snack food. And low fat sour cream is CRAP.
