It Was Just That Kind Of A Day

by Mrs. Chicken on April 18, 2008

I woke yesterday filled with rare optimism.

The sun was out, you see, and the weatherman predicted temperatures in the 70s. A long, hard winter filled with illness and emotional ups and downs seemed to vanish in a haze. Finally, we could go outside and laugh in the sunshine.

Sadly, it did not come to pass.

My mood was dampened when The Poo had a coughing fit about six blocks from home and threw up in the backseat on our way back from preschool.

Ah, the mucus barf! Is there anything finer on a spring day?

The Poo has allergies. Terrible ones, like her father. I have a pretty good helping of them myself, so it stands to reason that our kid would suffer, too.

She was “crabby” at school, according to her teacher and vacillated wildly between manic and weepy at home.

Around 5:30 she begged me to go outside while I grilled our dinner. So we shod her and put her in her sweatshirt. That lasted all of two minutes before she begged to go back inside.

I sat on the loveseat, waiting for the food to cook. She was next to me.

All of a sudden, she hid behind the couch. When I questioned her, she shot back, “I don’t wanna TALK to you, Mommy! I’m hiding so no one sees me!”

OK, fine. Whatever.

Mr. C made a phone call and I finished dinner.

Thursday, 5:45 p.m.

Fifteen minutes later, we heard snoring. Yes, that is my child, fast asleep on the kitchen floor behind our sofa.

Oh, well. What was it Scarlett O’Hara said?

Tomorrow is another day.

Poor Poo. I can’t imagine dealing with allergies at that level with a small child.

We seem to be lucky with our young charges – one of them is gluten intolerant, but nothing else.

Ours fall asleep at the drop of a hat too – particularly when they are unwell.

Asleep face down on a wooden floor. Wow. It must have been a rough old day.

Lisa April 18, 2008 at 7:25 am

poor thing. Amazing how those little bodies can just conk out like that.

I too, am filled with early-morning optimism at the prospect of a sunny day. Here’s to hoping we both get to enjoy one all the way through =)

OH, how cute and sad at the same time! I have a few photos like that — one of Athena in her winter coat with a cookie in her hand, asleep on the wood floor of our living room.

I hope this means you’ll be twittering like a fiend today! I have some sickos too so I’m looking forward to a day inside moored to the couch.

Poor little Poo, that photo says it all. Hope she’s better today, and that you have more warm weather on tap for the afternoon.

Oh poor thing! I hope she gets to feeling better!

Heather April 18, 2008 at 8:27 am

Awww. But she’s smart, she actually knows to just rest. My kids are tired or not feeling well? Pitch a big fit in public. Good times.

the preschool years are so intense for the little ones. and for the mommies!

I hate to admit it, but that picture makes me giggle. You *know* you’re tired when you can sleep in that position, on a wood floor no less.

When I saw the picture, I thought she was having a meltdown. I can’t believe she actually fell asleep! Poor little monkey.

Stupid allergies. They suck.

Kimberly April 18, 2008 at 10:26 am

My kids have fallen asleep like that too. My older daughter once fell asleep curled up on a kitchen chair.

Poor baby. Allergies suck.

Amanda April 18, 2008 at 10:31 am

She is simply delicious.

KDF April 18, 2008 at 1:13 pm

Hey, you know, those Hey Jude recitals can take a lot out of a little person.

Hope she feels better soon.

justmylife April 18, 2008 at 1:21 pm

Bless her heart. We have allergies around our house too. Hopes she gets to feeling better.

Bipolarlawyercook April 18, 2008 at 8:33 pm

Hey, at least she slept, relief for her and you, right? (Or am I missing something that my childless state prevents me from understanding?)

Daisy April 19, 2008 at 11:34 am

Poor kid. I feel for her; seasonal allergies can be miserable. The bright side is this: she put herself on time out when she wasn’t feeling well enough to interact with others. I hope she feels better soon, for everyone’s sake!

Stimey April 19, 2008 at 10:54 pm

Oh, your poor baby girl. It’s so sad to see them sad.
