I Hate Being Right

by Mrs. Chicken on April 22, 2008

Guess who gets to go for a three-hour glucose test next Wednesday?

It was just what I’d hoped for – to sit for an additional five hours in my OB’s office just to be told what I already know – I have The Diabetis, as we call it in our house.

I failed my one-hour test today,  just as I knew I would.

Then I went to pick up The Poo from school where her teacher looks so relieved to see me that I felt guilty for even bringing her in at all. Her infection isn’t the issue – and just for the record, it isn’t MRSA, and it is not catching – it is her bloody allergies.

I mention that because some parent in The Poo’s class wanted her sent home after they overheard me telling the teacher about her rash. That’s what you get for being honest. The Poo’s doc told me she could go to school. I mean, what kind of asshole would I have to be to send my kid to school with a flesh-eating diseases?

Sometimes people just suck.

Now we’re home, and she’s lethargic and running a slight fever. She threw up a boatload of mucus as we walked in the door and the doctor’s office is arguing with me about new meds for her. Oh, then I got a text message from my husband that we need to spend $1,000 on his car, at exactly the time when we DO NOT HAVE $1,000. The $425 I invoiced for my columns this month was going to compensate for our tax bill, but now it has to go to the fucking car.
Did I mention that my babysitter is moving away next week?

I had a feeling this week was going to suck. Remember that good mood? I’ve kissed it goodbye, with a vengeance.

slouching mom April 22, 2008 at 2:45 pm

Oh, man. Hate the gestational diabetes diet. Hate it. So sorry.

andrea April 22, 2008 at 2:54 pm

All I can say is I’m sorry. I hope things look up soon.

amanda April 22, 2008 at 3:12 pm

i hate you being right too.

sorry for the bad day…want me to sing “the sun will come out tomorrow” for you? never mind, that would probably just make it worse.

hugs

Lisa Milton April 22, 2008 at 3:39 pm

I wish that was one test you could cram for.

Sorry it’s been such a sucky week.

(And some parents can’t shut it…sorry again.)

BecomingMe April 22, 2008 at 4:18 pm

Ugh. Sorry you’re having a yucko week. I hated the three hour test. I passed it, because like an idiot I ate a donut the day of my 1 hour test, but still…

flutter April 22, 2008 at 4:38 pm

Dude! Dia-d-diabeet-beetus!

The good thing about gestational is that it usually goes away, after. I am sorry though, it sucks.

Sorry about the germaphobe in Poo’s class. Sometimes people are just dumb. They can’t help it.

Poor Poo.

And $1000 for the car?! Cripes, what happened? Did the transmission just fall out onto the street or what?

I’ll gladly spot you for a cuppa or lunch or whatevah. Just let me know if you want to get together and kvetch. :-)

cathy April 22, 2008 at 6:59 pm

Oh, dear.

I share your pain.

You poor dear.

FWIW, I had gestational diabetes with E, and it was pretty hard. Boy, that taught me a lot. Half a cup of beans?

Waiting Amy April 22, 2008 at 7:16 pm

Yucky, yuck, yuck. GD, rashes, dopey parents, AND a broken car? Your life is starting to sound like mine!

I feel you sista! Hang in there!

Sarah April 22, 2008 at 7:58 pm

That totally sucks about the diabetes! I also feel for you on the germaphobe parents. That’s why I HATE the huge deal they’re making about the “superbug”. It just freaks people out for NO reason and ignorant people love to latch on to hysteria.

I had a parent call me early one morning because at drop off, her husband over-heard another woman telling the worker that their child had a little temp and had diarrhea too. This parent was upset and rightfully so.

She didn’t jump the gun though, she simply asked why a child that was sick was being allowed to attend when she always kept her child home when he was sick. She was very nice and very polite about it.

When I inquired to the worker who had left that information with their child, I couldn’t help but chuckle. I called the parent back to tell her that the kid with a fever and diarrhea happen to be an 8 month old child who was slobbering and gnawing on his hands but didn’t have one single tooth in his head. Thus, we all assumed the temp and poop were part of the teething process.

When I called the mother back, she got a good laugh out of it as well and even told me that she was glad she didn’t get upset before giving me an opportunity to investigate. I too was glad she did that as well.

That just goes to show you that when people ask the proper questions instead of relying on hear say, they might not even have anything to worry about. Right.

Aw, damn. Well, on the up side, bad things happen in threes, right? So you’re all set to start some more good stuff. :)

sally April 22, 2008 at 8:08 pm

I feel for you. I, too, have the diabetis, and I am just darn hungry. When my son was born they said that I didn’t have it….and he was almost eleven pounds when he was born (via my vagina, no less) at thirty eight weeks. You don’t want to do that.

Time to go get my lame snack. I am just waiting for Ben and Jerry’s after the delivery.

Beth April 22, 2008 at 8:30 pm

Good lord, you are seriously due for some good luck. Go buy a lottery ticket.

Heather April 22, 2008 at 9:22 pm

Wow, hope the week gets better quick!

Isn’t diabetes fun. Sending my love for you and your sweet Poo.

Arkie Mama April 22, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Oh no! That’s definitely one time you want to be wrong, wrong, wrong.

Poor Poo. Hope the rash fades soon.

sugarplum's mom April 22, 2008 at 10:25 pm

aww poor Poo.. my daycare provider is incredibly sensitive about colds.. no fever, clear mucus, she gets to go to daycare. But the daycare lady still bitches about it. I understand why… she wants to keep her family and her other kids healthy.. but still.. it’s a cold! Get over it!

MammaLoves April 22, 2008 at 10:29 pm

And it’s only Tuesday!

Dammit! I’m sorry.

Stimey April 22, 2008 at 11:01 pm

I’m so sorry. What a crappy day. And really, if she’s not contagious, what business is it of anybody’s whether she goes to school? Sorry about your test.

andi April 23, 2008 at 10:27 am

Nooooo! This hits the height of suckitude. I’m sorry mama. I would suggest you cuddle up with a bottle of wine, but that would be totally inappropriate given your status as an incubator. Be well.

Karen April 23, 2008 at 11:57 am

Oh I feel for ya sista! Bad juju all over huh?
I had the “Di-Bee-tees”(as we called it) with my 2nd pregnancy. Here are my helpful hints, cheesecake with no toppings and cocoa puffs with no milk, in moderation were what got me through those horrible sweet cravings!
