When The Poo was born we lived in a loft apartment in the middle of our city’s downtown area. It was great for young newlyweds, but not so much for young parents.
It was the middle of the year, however, and moving was out of the question. Plus, my dad had just died, and I wasn’t really in the mood to move house.
And it was December.
So we brought The Poo home to a nursery that was as warm as we could make it, what with 15-foot ceilings and exposed pipes. At least it was a sunny celery green, nice and bright and cheerful. We filled the room with white furniture and pink-and-yellow bedding and it was there that we became a family.
For that reason I will always hold the East End Lofts dear in my heart.
This time I am a homeowner – my second home, in fact. While the suburban tract house we live in at the moment is, at best, uninspired, we’ve endeavored to make it our own.
We painted the family room/kitchen combo a sunny yellow. The Poo’s room is cotton-candy pink and her bathroom is a cool, ocean blue, decorated with colorful prints of the beach and a photograph of rubber ducks taken by her maternal grandmother, a talented photographer.
The rest of the house is painted in what I call Millenium Neutral – a light brownish beige that is actually quite pleasant. It is similar to what we had in our first home and so our furniture fits the decor perfectly.
We are lucky to have four bedrooms, and we spent this afternoon emptying the den in preparation for painting.
The den will soon be Shaggy’s room, the nursery.
For the first time, I am able to decorate my child’s room as I wish. And I am ridiculously excited.
I spent a fortune on quarts of paint in all different shade of green, before deciding on Benjamin Moore’s Pottery Barn color, perennial.
I ordered mod bedding from Skip*Hop.
I eye storage options at Target with the intensity of a organization professional.
I websurf for wall decals.
My mom bought us a beautiful, soft brown glider and ottoman, and when I close my eyes I see myself holding my wee boy as we rock and rock, The Poo playing contentedly at my feet in a pool of late-morning sunshine.
I know the reality will be far messier. Hair in my face, I’ll run for the shower during the brief five minutes the kid isn’t crying for food or a diaper change. I’ll snap impatiently at The Poo when she whines and tells me she needs me to help her go potty because she doesn’t “like to pull up” her own pants. I know the pristine room of my imagination will be littered with dried-out wipes and dirty onesies.
Still.
In my mind, I am creating this peaceful space for the newest member of our family.
I’m having the time of my life, in spite of it all.
So what do you think of our choices?

Fabulous!
We haven’t quite finished the nursery for Buster and he’s two months old already. Oh well. At least I have cute bedding for him!
ADORABLE.
A lot of things have changed when we got married and have a kid as well. It was a drastic one. We sometimes miss life in the city.
Since we got used to the country side, we already considered this our home. And we’re also looking forward to have our own soon.
Love your choices!! Decorating a nursery is so fun…I almost want a little girl just so I can do that awesome pink and brown combo that’s so popular right now!
I love your choices! We’re doing Brady Bunch style for now- three boys in one room with bunks and bed and the baby will be with us for a while. Not much for a nursery, but I’m really hoping to find cradle bedding that matches the lavender in my room. Not much luck yet.

It sounds wonderful. We are finally moing towards a point with C’s job that we are looking at houses. Real houses. I can’t wait to paint.
Ooh, love the dots! I still miss the first nursery we had, too, back in our NJ apartment. My husband did an ABC stencil on the wall and secretly color-coded in our names and our two baby names (boy/girl).
It’s perfect for your little man!! I love it!
I am so angry, none of this stuff was available when my 2 yr old was a baby. I walked around not knowing how to decorate for a boy. I am ashamed to say he got stuck with animals. He doesn’t seem to mind so much.
I am glad you are having fun with this. See, it is getting better, already.
stunning. LOVE!
I love the polka dot pattern in primary colors. Very cute and modern.
Gorgeous! How much fun is that? We couldn’t have a nursery the first time around, so I hope next time to get to do it. LOVE your choices.
I love the dots! And he will not outgrow it too quickly.
It all looks fantastic!
now I feel super unqualified to be a parent, because you have a gorgeous nursery planned and I’m not even close to deciding whether we’ll even decorate.
love the choices…
kinda makes me want to “think” about baby number two!!
i said kinda!
Love the choices. And I am sure in your memories, it will be just as beautiful as you imagined!
Love it! I have a 3′x5′ throw rug that we used in Evan’s baby room that might look nice with your bedding choice. It’s gorgeous and came from a chi chi baby store in Skokie (my MIL bought it for us). We don’t use it, as Evan’s outgrown the motif. If you’d like to see it, just let me know. You can have the rug if you desire it for Shaggy.
Love, love, love it.
I had two girls so I got cheated on the nesting the second time around.
Ooh, so exciting! I love the bedding, can’t wait to see it all put together!
