37

by Mrs. Chicken on July 22, 2008

You know you’re old when you really really really want a screen door for your birthday.

I’m celebrating today with a 9:30 a.m. trip to the OB for a little fetal monitoring, and then a frantic session of writing at the cafe in the hopes of finally meeting my deadlines.

Later this afternoon I’ll pick up the cake I ordered for myself, of which I will eat just a teeny tiny bit, in mild defiance of my gestational diabetes.

I can count on one hand the number of birthdays I’ve spent without my mom. It feels strange to be here just with my MIL, and without my husband, who has sung to me over glowing candles for the past 11 years.

But I do have my Poo, my sweet, sweet Poo. This morning she came to visit me in bed at 7 a.m., climbing under the covers and sighing.

“Mommy,” she said.

That one word: a mantra, a prayer, and entreaty all wrapped up into one.

This isn’t where I thought I’d be when I looked down the long tunnel from my 20s to my 30s.

But I’m finding that no matter where I travel, I am always home.

Here’s to whatever 37 brings.

Leanne July 22, 2008 at 8:57 am

Happy Birthday! I’ve never left a comment before, but I read your blog almost every day! You are funny and a great writer and I wish I had the guts to put myself out there like you do! I just had to comment today because we share a birthday! And I can also commiserate with you about being pregnant…though this is my first and I’ve still got 17 weeks to go!

Hope your birthday turns out better than you thought and have that slice of cake guilt free! I’ll be thinking of you when I have my slice tonight, too!

Happy Birthday day!! Eat cake, enjoy the day and all that is in it. This is your last birthday as a mother of one, cherish it!! (not that a birthday of a mother of 2 is bad) Have a wonderful day!

Pammie July 22, 2008 at 9:29 am

Happy Birthday, girl! Enjoy your cake and know that I’m thinking of you!

Happy Birthday. Welcome to the 37 club!

Diabetics can certainly have cake on their birthday. You just need to give an extra injection for it.

Renee July 22, 2008 at 9:35 am

Happy Birthday. Eat that bite, hug Poo and know that 37 isn’t really all that bad.

Happy Birthday! Hope it is a good one, tell me what 37 is like, I’m going there in January. And yes, mommy is the best word in the world…as long as it isn’t said in that “you aren’t doing what I want, I’m really tired, I’m hungry and I’m on the verge of a meltdown” way my boys say it from time to time.

andrea July 22, 2008 at 9:57 am

Happy Birthday! Try and enjoy your birthday as much as possible. Yeah, where we’d thought we’d be and where you are tend to be very different. :) Too bad, huh?

Happy Birthday! For Christmas the first year I was married, Al got me a dishwasher. I was the happiest person in all of Illinois that day! I took pictures of it like crazy. And now, it is still at our house and I wish we could take it with us wherever we go. I miss my awesome dishwasher.

Lisa M. Lynch July 22, 2008 at 11:48 am

Happy birthday to you. My mom gave me my favorite birthday quote when I turned 35, and I kept it in mind last year, and I’ll remember it again when I turn 37 in a few short months: “If you’re old before your time, you’re old for a really long time.” I’ll keep saying it even when I’m really old. Like, you know, 40.

Happiest of birthdays to you!

I asked for a vacuum cleaner one year for my birthday and this year I got another sewing machine (a serger). Both made me extremely happy. Pretty pathetic, no?

Carrie July 22, 2008 at 11:00 pm

Happy Birthday!

And wanting a screen door doesn’t make you old, it makes you practical. A few years, when I was 23 or 24, I asked my MIL for some nice pans for my birthday. I remember once when I was a kid, probably 9 or 10, my dad got my mom a ceiling fan for her birthday. She was really angry about it (so not like my mom, so I obviously don’t know the whole story) and I remember thinking “if you need a ceiling fan, why is that a bad gift”?

Apparently, that makes me a really hard person to buy for.

Christy July 22, 2008 at 11:31 pm

Hope you had a wonderful day, and the you enjoy that itty, bitty piece of cake ;)
