I’m writing this from my hospital bed, about 13 hours after the birth of my Shaggy Boy.
My gigantic Shaggy Boy.
Now I understand why I could barely move, eat, breathe or sleep – nine pounds, 12 ounces, 22 inches. I mean, Christ in a sidecar, people, that isn’t a baby, that’s a Thanksgiving turkey for 20 people!
But he is totally adorable, and I feel quite protective of his hugeness. Yeah, the boy is big. But the nurses around here are acting like he should be on the cover of the National Enquirer.
Right now he’s being circumcised, and I haven’t seen him since 6 a.m. this morning. When they bring him back to me, I imagine he will be a leeeetle bit pissed at his mama. But if I can live with his Michael-Jordan sized foot in my ribs for nine months, I can deal with a little pissyness.
The Poo declared her new brother “gorgeous,” but I can’t be sure if it was a heartfelt declaration or one motivated by the sight of her very own American Girl Doll, delivered to her by Shaggy himself. No matter what the motivation, the sight of her kissing him just about caused me to burst into a million pieces of fairy glitter.
I am, as you might imagine, very tired and very, very sore. It was a chore to get the kid out, and plenty o’ tugging and pushing and smooshing went on during my surgery. I feel like someone drove a taxi through my uterus.
While I get my feet under me, literally and figuratively, I’ll be welcoming a series of truly wonderful guests posts. So stay tuned for some great writing, and I’ll be back just as soon as I can.
Thanks for being there for me these past nine months. I won’t forget it.

Congrats. He is truly an adorable baby!
Having had a very large baby myself, I understand the relief, as well as the feeling of being able to do anything after having had such a large baby.
Good luck and get as much rest as you can!
Geez, he’s not THAT big!! lol National Enquirer!!
And that tugging and pushing…blech, I remember that VERY well x2!
Congrats again! I hope your midsection is feeling better soon. Those first few minutes out of bed after my section were, um, memorable.
Take care!
Mrs. Chicken -
CONGRATULATIONS! He is a beautiful boy.
I have been lurking here for many months and I don’t think I have commented yet. I am so glad that eveything and everyone is ok. Get plenty of rest while you can!

Rest mama! And congrats again!
Enjoy the new days with your lovely boy! Looking forward to more great writing.
Congratulations!
I am so glad to hear from you and that you are doing well! I had a 9 pounder, too, that turned out to be just a big baby- no other reason for his big-ness despite all their testing! I hope you recover super fast and are home soon!
Steph
congrats again. both my kids were huge: tell everyone it’s because you just ate that well when you were pregnant. it will make them paranoid about their pwueny (how in the world is that spelled) little 7 pounders being underweight and it being all their fault.
Congratulations!! He is absolutely gorgeous!
congrats again friend!
so happy to hear from you and love the update on the poo meeting shaggy!!
take care and enjoy the foggy baby bliss!
hope there was a little something delivered to your hospital room in the last few hours…
my Six was 22.5 inches at birth, so I understand how the nurses can act. (But he was only 8 pounds. Only!)
He just looks swell. Really. Healthy and delicious.
So glad you are all well.
oh honey, am I ever happy for you. so happy he’s here and healthy and loved and lovable. and SO FREAKIN HAPPY you’re done suffering (through that portion of the program).
love to you, and strength, and most important: rest.
xo Deb
well done all of you… you … hubby and The Poo
Best wishes & congratulations x
Congratulations! I’ll be here for the next 14 years so we can work our way through the teen years together.
xo
I totally know what you’re talking about with the nurses and others. My son was 10lb. 12oz and 23″ long at birth and it started the moment they pulled him out of my belly in surgery and didn’t stop until…well..ever. On the one hand I felt validated in my discomfort, but on the other hand you just wish people would GET OVER IT ALREADY.
He’s beautiful, regardless of size.
Big babies run in my family so I suppose I’ll be looking forward to a large one too! Congratulations again!
I agree with the Poo – he’s gorgeous! My girls were all just over 6 pounds, so I can’t even imagine that!
I am so relieved that he’s out and you’re both doing well
Congratulations!!!
Congratulations! He’s so beautiful and I’m glad to read you and your son are both doing well. My son had meconium in his fluid before he was born but they didn’t know that till they broke my water(I had a vag. delivery). But he was fine too. A little jaundiced but fine. Again, congrats!
Congratulations! He’s so addorable. He also shares a birthday with my little girl.
He really is beautiful. I’m so glad he arrived safe and sound.
My husband was eleven and a half pounds when he was born and the nurses made all sorts of fuss over him, too.
Congratulations again. Get some rest, if you can!
He is so gorgeous. I can’t wait to see pictures of Shaggy and the Poo together. I think MY heart will burst into a million pieces of fairy glitter!
Congratulations again. Now get some REST! You deserve it.
Good call on the American Girl from the little brother. If the Poo is half as ga-ga over those dolls as Flynn, she’s totally thrilled.
Glad to hear you’re recovering well. And I’m sure Shaggy’s not the biggest baby those nurses have seen.
Take care and try to get some rest (as best you can in the hospital).
i thought his weight was a type at first! that is one big, big baby!!! but he’s super delish…and now it all makes sense! of COURSE you were so unconfortable!
He’s gorgeous, congratulations! And yay for c-sections!!!
Congratulations, your son is beautiful. I’m delighted things went well for you. Best wishes.
I already love the little turkey.
They were the same way when Chicken was born but she was “only” 9 lbs 5 oz., but 24 inches long….she was mighty painful as well. Glad to “see” you. I was anxiously awaiting a post from you all day. (Not like you had a baby or anything yesterday…LOL)
HUGS!
Congrats!
You sound wonderful. Enjoy those sacred first days. We’ll be here when you return!
Congrats Ms. Chicken–he is absolutely adorable. And you are truly a trooper for carrying and delivering such a beautiful (and ample) turkey.
Rest up and enjoy your new family of four.
Can’t wait to see more pictures when you get your legs back under you.
Great things come in big packages.
My husband’s cousin was 10.5 pounds, and that was almost 20 years ago. Now that was a big baby! Yours sounds perfectly perfect.
Rest, enjoy, love.
Congratulations again! I’m glad you have that foot out of your rib.
9 lbs! Goodness…and imagine if he cooked full term!
9, 12 that’s awesome. And now you know why you couldn’t get comfy, cause he was taking over.
Just to make you feel better, a friend of mine had a little girl last year, Savannah, who was 11, 4. Now that is National Enquirer huge.
I am so happy for you all.
He’s not THAT big! It’s 4.5 kg, thereabouts. My one friend was 5 kg at birth, and another friend’s baby was 5.8 kg. He’s still very tall for his age – he’s two and a half, and wears clothes for 4-year-olds.
I had to send my husband back home for the 3month clothes when Wyatt was born, (9.8), I mean, I *knew* he was bigger than my first (6.5), but I really had no idea he’d be *that* much larger! Anyway, that is a totally round about way of saying that I completely understand how you were feeling (pressure!) and how it will be if he continues to be on the high end of the charts (frustrating and wonderful)!
Love to you all -
OMG!! What a big baby!! Congrats again!
yay for all of you!
Belatedly, congratulations. He is positively beautiful.
My daughter was a month early and I could have really done without the midwives telling me every two minutes, “She’s such a dink!” I get it, she’s small! Simply put, I feel your pain. Not literally of course. I wish you a speedy recovery!
Such incredible news! So glad everyone’s healthy and happy.
TRULY AWESOME! God Bless you all. We send you all of our love and prayers for a speedy recovery so that you can enjoy this new life in comfort as well as joy!
Congratulations!! And here’s to a speedy recovery.
(BTW, my Little Guy is quite big and everyone keeps acting like I feed him chocolate or something. Yeesh.)
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
I’m so thrilled for you! I hope things are going smoothly for you. I’m catching up on your posts right now. Congratulations!
THIS is why I missed it! It was when I was sick as a dog and not moving, much less reading anything.
AGAIN, CONGRATS!!!!!!!
