From Bad Habits To Healthy Eating

Awhile back the good folks at 3-A-Day asked me to write about our horrid eating habits, and how we will tackle our goal of a healthier diet during the busy back-to-school season.

Take a look, would you?

Living in the Midwest has been a culture shock.

Growing up in an industrial city on Lake Ontario meant my idea of food was shaped almost exclusively at the grocery store. Since relocating to central Illinois 18 months ago, we are much closer to the land, and, therefore our food.

Which, I have to admit, sometimes freaks me out.

Instead of fall foliage landing in our backyard, we find cornhusks.

I know! Seriously, cornhusks! Stuck in our fence!

But it also has its advantages. The farmer’s market is chock full o’ fresh, local produce, not to mention locally raised meat and homemade cheeses.

Mmmmm, cheeeese. I’ve always been a cheese girl, a dietary habit I also passed on to my daughter. Considering that her palate is limited to four items, I am lucky indeed that she’ll eat a grilled cheese sandwich for just about every meal, if I let her.

My husband is exactly the same way, even though he professes his desire to eat “whole foods” most earnestly. Unfortunately, his idea of a whole food is ketchup.

Hey, it has tomatoes in it, right?

    Great article!

We live five minutes from a vast farmer’s market and are surrounded by farm country. I go every week, all year long, because they also have a great selection of free-range chicken and other organic meats. Some weeks it seems easier to just go to the grocery store on the corner but then I remind myself that I’m lucky to have the choice of the market so close to me. And off I head.

Ha! Here’s to cornhusks in the yard! (I’ve been living in Indiana since I was 8. Where did I live before that? Scotland. Talk about food culture shock. I never forgot that feeling.)

Hah! I can relate to that — my husband once reported on a survey for work that he consumes whole grains “often.” I was like, HUH-what? Since when? And he goes, “Well, you buy that whole grain bread, and I eat that….” {Sigh} The man wouldn’t know a whole grain if it up & bit him.
