When we’re on the road or if I’m doing chores upstairs, I’ll sometimes let The Poo use my MacBook to play her beloved computer games from sites like Noggin or PBSKids.
I watched her manipulating the track pad the other day and mused on how she would never know a world without computers that move around the house, or a time before the Internet.
I was 12 when we got our first Macintosh. The year was 1984, and our neighbor, Peter, was a student at the local university. My dad the engineer was quick to recognize the fluid beauty of the Apple system, and asked if Peter would be willing to let us use his student discount to purchase the system at the university’s bookstore.
It was on the Mac that I typed my eighth-grade term paper.
Now, I watch my kid play on something that was unimaginable to me even 15 years ago — a laptop with more capabilites than the computer that ran the lunar module.
I was editing some photos yesterday when I noticed that the Photo Booth function was open in my dock. I clicked it to close it, and found a series of photographs of The Poo.
We often use Photo Booth together, whiling away late winter afternoons taking silly self-portraits. Apparently, the girl figured out how to use it on her own.
The photos I found were like a window into her little personality; images of how she sees herself.
I hope she always understands how beautiful she is.

She is beautiful!
I always enjoy finding photo booth photos that that girls leave me.
Yes, she is beautiful. I didn’t get my first computer until after I graduated from college. I am always astounded to watch my little kids expertly maneuver around the internet.
These are just the most precious thing. I can’t believe how lucky you are to have found these.
I would give anything to find something of this of my girls. I so hope I do.
Bless her little heart.
We’ve always had Macs.. my dad a freelance DTP so they were always around since I can remember. Our first laptop was just hilarious compared to what we have now. Craziness.
Just so touched by these photos
xx
Not too surprising. We got my then 5 yr old the OLPC last year for Christmas. She immediately found the video and picture functions. Took me forever to figure out what she was doing, but the songs could be heard all over the house.
Kids do well when left to their own devices. They come up with the best stuff on their own, it seems. Great fun that she gets to play with your laptop. Lucky for you to have discovered the photographs. She’s a doll.
I love my Macbook. So much so that I don’t let Patrick near it. Precious pictures, though.
How great that Mac makes it so easy for kids, too. It’s funny to think about the differences this will make in their lives. (My first computer was the Commodore 64, which definitely makes me older than you!) But I switched to the Mac in college & have loved them ever since.
My Dad brought a computer home for my brother and I when we were kids, and we were so amazed that we, um, took it apart to see how it worked and, well, when we put it together again it… blew up with clouds of noxious smoke.
We didn’t get another till we moved out and got jobs.
My brother bought Mum and Dad their next computer, and I got them wireless internet beamed from the nearest town. And in my insanity I let the kids use my laptop, with the words “One day you’ll have children of your ooooown!” ringing in my ears…
Look at that punim!
oh, she really really is
We are buying a laptop after Christmas specifically for the kids to use. I dread to think what they will do to it while we are not watching.
She is gorgeous, and turning into such a lovely, lovely young lady.
She really is a beauty isn’t she? What an amazing post.
Awww. Watch out if your cell phone has a camera, too. I recently discovered some self-portraits of a toddler on mine (probably inadvertently taken, however).
She IS beautiful! I love that last shot – so pretty.
It flys by – sadly. My current post illustrates what happens when little girls grow up and the pictures become pictures of a woman. It’s hard on a momma.
I love those pictures. My kids do that too.
We had a computer when I was a kid. Mostly we played games on it. I couldn’t have been more than four when my dad brought it home. So for me, computers were always around. The new technology is so cool though.
Oh, she is such a little muffin. What a fun discovery those precious photos must have been!
