Idle Hands

by Mrs. Chicken on April 30, 2009

Last year my mom gave me a really nice sewing machine, after I experienced a strange spurt of craftiness. I discovered hand embroidery after looking for something with which to occupy myself after The Poo went to bed—something besides Little Debbie Swiss Cake Rolls.

The ease of that type of crafting whetted my appetite for more. Which is really odd, for those who know me. The fact that this surge of creativity came with pregnancy isn’t lost on me. I blame the hormones.

After I took a couple lessons on the machine my mom sent, I spent a Sunday afternoon making these little creatures for The Poo:

Now, she sleeps with them every night. Their names are Big Monster and Little Monster, which aptly sums up our household now.

After Shaggy was born, The Hot Fuss™ drained me of my will to live took up all my spare time, and I stopped sewing altogether. In the fall we did a major purge, and most of my craft materials got stowed in the basement. The sewing machine gathers dust in the guest room closet.

Lately, though, I’m restless. Like I want to make something, the way my mother used to make special things for me. Maybe, just maybe, life is finally slowing down enough to allow my hands—my cooking, cleaning, diapering, hugging and holding hands—to be idle.

I’m so glad your daughter loves those monsters, but they scare the crap out of me. But I have an inordinate fear of monsters, so maybe it’s just me.

Aargh! Now I’m jealous. I just gave my two sewing machines away for “Parts”. But I will get a new one, one day. When the boys are at university. Those monsters are just gorgeous. You should stock up for christmas and try and sell some? You could even make decorations! Now my sewing bone is itchy.

Those are unreal. I really, really wish I had that sort of talent. I have nothing quite like it. So you rule!

Those are great! I have a whole slew of things I need to sew-trying to get my new craft room in order since I lost it to my new Master bedroom & Giggles gained the upstairs master and we get her room. Still ample room for sewing & all my other projects.

Those monsters, to me they scream, “Make me an Etsy shop!”

I would totally buy one.

Dude! I totally agree with Jules! Etsy SHOP!!

I would love makes things like this for my kids, I just haven’t the ambition or the skillz.

I never ever learned to use a sewing machine, though I got a mini one for Christmas a few years ago. I think I may have to take it out and at least give it a try, because these monsters? ADORABLE.

So sweet! There is something so special about handmade gifts. I am far from skilled in the craft arena but making my daughter a dress for her birthday, THAT SHE ACTUALLY WORE, was a highlight of my recent life. I’d like to think that I will find the time to craft some more after this next baby arrives…
