Over-compensating

by Mrs. Chicken on May 25, 2009

You know how second kids always get the shaft? Like, no baby book, no record of their milestones, just a handful of photos?

And the first child? Pshhh. A million a thousand hundreds of photos, detailed baby book blog dedicated just to them, every sneeze documented with date, location and detailed description.

I worried that I’d short The Babyman*, that I’d be too busy to craft loving stories about him. That I would forget to grab the camera when he did something adorable.

*cue crazy laughter*

These days when the shutter clicks, it’s usually pointed in his direction—so much so that his big sister adopted a new tactic. She runs in front of the lens and yells, “Hey Mom! Take my picture! You never take my picture anymore!”

Poor, neglected baby.

Maybe I’m over-compensating a little bit, but can you blame me? I mean, look at this face. Don’t you just want to eat this face? Cover it in caramel sauce and eat it with a spoon?

at the park

So how about you? Do you over-compensate, or will your second and third kids be bitter when they get older, and their “memory box” consists of their hospital bracelet and a photo of their older sibling blocking the lens?

*We never call him Shaggy anymore. He is The Babyman, plain and simple. So henceforth, that is how he shall be known.

We had so little money when our first was born, I worried she’d be shortchanged. No problem: enter grandparents! :)

Hehe, my older son said yesterday while looking at pictures on my computer that there were a lot of his brother. I laughed and said that it was nothing compared to the hundreds of him from his first 3 years!!

I love to take pics of my boys, but my younger is so laid back and edible that I do take more of him these days. Time is fleeting and I want to hold on to him the only way I can.

Since I’m only having one, that shouldn’t be a problem. HOWEVER, have I done a baby book for him? Um, no. When the heck am I gonna do that? I guess I kind of consider the blog his baby book. I know that’s not the same thing.

PS: I take a bazillion photos. It used to be of the dogs, but now it’s T Junior. The dogs like to run in front of the lens, too. Maybe they’re trying to tell me something…

I think there is an ebb and flow. I took more pictures of Lucy as a baby, but I think that has more to do with my camera, which I didn’t buy until Sam was six months old. I’ve been fairly ok with both of their baby books, though I wouldn’t say I’ve been great with either one. Even though you’re all about babyman right now, probably The Poo will become of focus of your lens soon enough!

Either way, we don’t mind! You have lovely kids and it’s always nice to see photos of them!

Another kinda ditto to Kerrie.

Before the wee one was born it was my cats. So so SO many pictures of my cats. I’m a picture takin’ fool PERIOD.

Being the oldest, I can relate to the jillion pictures thing. I had a PROFESSIONAL picture taken every month until I was almost two. Enter my little sister. Ha! My younger sister and brother definitely got shafted. I mean I can find school things of theirs saved but I had a book dedicated to school.

However- after 9 years of three kids, my mom decided to have just one more with her 2nd husband. Bring on the camera craze. You know what though? I realized that A LOT of those pictures of him were taken by yours truly.

meh.

I’ve worried about a lot of things considering I haven’t even started TRYING to have number two yet. Maybe that’s why I haven’t?

He is indeed spoonworthy.

emily, my first-born actually got the shaft…we didn’t get our digital camera until after josh was born…so we have WAY fewer pictures of her. and she doesn’t EVER let us forget that.

Love the Babyman! Nom Nom Nom-I could eat his cheeks right up.

As for short changing-I think it works both ways with my girls. there seems to be an ebb and flow of who I focus on. I really think its who is doing more activities during each season. Altho now that I take a bunch more ‘fly on the wall” photos they are getting equal play time, or so it seems, just not on my blog so much anymore.

Ali- I think that’s something else us first borns are good at- harboring resentments! Ha!

I actually didn’t know the extent of my moms severe “first born-itis” until about two months ago when I uncovered all of those infant/toddler professional shots.

Definitely an edible babyman.

I was taking more pictures of baby 2 than his older brother when he wasn’t mobile, since he couldn’t run away from the camera. Now they’re both mobile, so I capture whoever is zipping by, waving a lightsaber.

First, I’d totally eat his big chubby cheeks right now. Second, dude, think about like the 6th kid. They get called the dogs name half the time. I have a friend who is the 7th of 8 kids. He doesn’t even have a middle name, because his mom got tired of trying to remember them all. Third, because I like to number things, have you looked at those Blurb books? I have made a few for Harrison, because it is frankly very easy and then he will have books about just him. It’s like a very easy scrapbooking idea

We’ve taken more photos of the baby than even the other two kids…but they were not neglected either!

I think the second kid is usually fine in the picture department. It’s the 4th + kid(s) who have no photos!

My older daughter HATES to get her picture taken, unless she’s allowed to make the ugliest face she can make. My younger daughter is a HAM. Grade A pork. She will pose for anything, and give you any emotion you ask for. This has led to a decidedly lopsided photo album, but when I capture my eldest unaware, man alive, she has such old soul eyes.

Since we have only one, I won’t ever know – but PLEASE, keep the photos of that kid (well, both of them) coming.

Jordan May 25, 2009 at 9:06 pm

He is just gorgeous! I’ve already told my 2 boys that we have more video of #1 and more photos of #2 (since we had no digital camera back when we had #1 in 2000). They seem to accept it – so far. I did make baby books, photo albums, and completed 1st year baby calendars for them when they were newborns, figuring that those early days when I was at home with them full-time were the only times I’d get them done. I guess I’ve always been a documenter and didn’t have a blog when they were babies!

What a cutie he is. Keep taking those pictures :) I’ve currently got a ten year old, with another baby hopefully coming soon. When I have my next one he/she will be spoiled rotten because of how long I’ve waited. If anyone is jealous it will be my first born, due to all of the attention I’m sure.

In the beginning, I thought I wouldn’t get enough pictures of my second child so I put the camera and video camera on the counter in the kitchen to always have them ready. Now, I am asking his sister to get out of the shot so I can get a picture of him. However, it becomes more difficult now that he has an opinion and it is often that he doesn’t want his picture taken.

I think my first is getting a little shafted. I was looking at her pictures for this past year of her life and there weren’t that many. As for our third child, we already have tons of pictures (more than the other 2) and she isn’t even born yet.

At least I can tell all of them that I was fooling myself when I bought that baby book for my first. I don’t think it is even half full. Who had time to sit and document all that stuff? I was stealing a nap.

Haven’t had number two yet, but judging by my previous history with over-compensating? Absolutely. I do like the image of the oldest blocking the lens.

Yup, my second has it made. Almost all the pictures now, plus the blog. Not the mention the fact that I just can’t seem to discipline the sweet little thing. If anyone ends up in therapy, it’s going to be the older one.
