That isn’t to say that I can’t be labeled. I am many things: wife, daughter, sister, friend, mother, partner, writer, worker, sister … the list is long. Many of the labels I’ve worn include “not”—not popular, not outgoing.

I never identified myself using labels.

That isn’t to say that I can’t be labeled. I am many things: wife, daughter, sister, friend, mother, partner, writer, worker, sister … the list is long. Many of the labels I’ve worn include “not”—not popular, not outgoing.

But when it comes to -isms, I just don’t think about them. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t some kind of self-serving sermon about how I am above being labeled or how I’m just so cool and so out there that labels don’t apply to me. In fact, I am a very mainstream person. I like cable TV and J. Crew and the potato is my all-time favorite food.

No, it isn’t that.

Take feminism, for instance. Could you define me as a feminist? In the classical sense, no. But in the way I live my life, making choices that are best for me in terms of work and family, then yes, you could call me a feminist. When it came time for me to choose a profession, I made the decision based not on my gender, but on my passion.

I wanted to be a reporter. It never occurred to me to think about myself as a “female reporter.” Then I wanted to stay home with my daughter. So could you call me a SAHM? Yeah, you could, and sometimes I call myself that, too, because it is the easiest, most literal way to describe my life to outsiders.

I am a mom. I stayed home with my kids.

Now, I spend many hours of my week writing for money. So that makes me a WAHM, right? And that makes YOU a WOHM, right? And what if you work part-time? Are you a PTSAHM or a PTWOHM?

All this alphabet soup only serves to mire us in the very thing we say we seek so hard to avoid. We say we want to love and support one another. But we find new and interesting ways to point the finger at each other and pin these labels on our backs so that we can point with the power of a crowd behind us.

At what point do we let the crowd become a community?

At what point do we stop fighting among ourselves and act like the loving, caring woman—yes, women—that we are inside our hearts? When do we realize that words are powerful, and labels are among the strongest weapons in our arsenal, for good and for bad?

Words like retard and stupid and hate and ugly and fat are as hurtful as bullets. They wound, and the scars are tender for a lifetime.

Words like SAHM and WAHM and WOHM and hipster parent and helicopter parent and bad mother … these are all words that are at once meaningless and more profound than we can ever fathom. We use these words, sometimes thoughtfully, to provoke debate, and sometimes emotionally, because we are tired and frustrated and we just know the grass is greener over there, for that person wearing the label we covet.

***

She was a woman in a male-dominated corporate culture, the kind of woman who takes her earring off to talk on the phone. She had her colors done and charged it to the company as a “development opportunity.” She wore scarves in creative ways and had the kind of haircut you see on a certain kind of marketing executive who came of age during the second round of the feminist revolution.

This is the woman for whom the battle was fought. The marching and the protesting, and all the tears and sweat and blood of those early revolutionaries in fact created this woman.

She would do anything to get ahead. She would shake your hand while stabbing you in the back. Her every move was calculated to build the next rung on her ladder to the top. She called herself a “champion for women” and one day, she told me that I would move up a lot faster if I would only wear more make-up.

And a skirt wouldn’t hurt my chances, either.

***

My daughter was sick last weekend, and I prefer to tend to the wee ones when they are unwell. I have so many memories of my mother’s cool hand on my hot forehead. I cherish those memories; they make me feel safe and cared for even now, when the dark middle of the night wraps its hands around my neck and I struggle with all the worries in my heart.

So I bundled her up, my little girl, and held her head while she vomited in a towel. I pushed her hair out of her eyes and fetched her cold water. Drink it in tiny sips, I told her. Mama’s right here with you, I told her.

She lay next to me, and she reached out with her hand. I took her small palm in my own and squeezed gently. “Mama,” she whispered. “You are the bestest mama of all the mamas. Bester than anyone else’s mama.”

And just like that, my girl, she labeled me. It is a badge I wear with pride, the only label that need apply. It is a label 38 years in the making, one delivered with the purity of soul that can only be achieved when your heart is new.

These are the labels that matter.

I was 25 years old when I covered my first election day.

I worked for a small chain of weekly suburban newspapers, and my beat was the largest in the group—and the most Republican. The citizens of this small town voted regularly and predictably, with very little dissent.

Not at that time a very political animal, I shrugged when my editor told me to gear up for that November evening. It was 1996, and the national scene was pretty much decided. The Clinton-Gore camp was going to sweep again, winning handily.

I went home that Tuesday around noon, after my paper went to bed. The presses didn’t run, however; it was the one time each year that we delivered a day late.

I tried to nap, but instead found myself wandering around my apartment at loose ends. I clicked over to CNN idly, watching the returns.

That evening I dressed in my work clothes and headed off to Repubican headquarters to watch the local and national returns.

That night changed everything.

The ad called Barack Obama a chicken, for voting “present” in the Illinois legislature. My husband pointed out that the number of votes called during the candidate’s tenure was so high as to render the statistic irrelevant.

“Disgusting,” I said, shaking my head at the desperation that would cause such a distortion of truth.

Behind me, a grandfatherly-looking man smiled.

“Yes,” he said. “You are disgusting.”

My head swiveled around to see him, clad in a blue windbreaker, grinning at me.

I turned back to my family—my handsome, good-hearted husband and beautiful, innocent children.

Disgusting.

I am disgusting, my family is disgusting, because we support the truth. Because we debunk lies. Because we will cast our vote for hope next Tuesday.

Disgusting.

You know what’s disgusting?

Racism is disgusting.

Poverty is disgusting.

Child mortality is disgusting.

Hunger is disgusting.

Lies are disgusting.

Foreclosure and bankruptcy are disgusting.

Sick children waiting for health care are disgusting.

War is disgusting.

If looking for a solution to the ills visited upon us the last eight years is disgusting, so be it. It is a label I wear with pride.

I’m sick of myself.

Seriously.

How much whining can one woman do?

A lot, it turns out. Y’all are lucky I didn’t have this here blog when The Poo was born. Gak, what a bore that would have been:

“Oh, woe is me, my baby sleeps through the night, but she wakes up at 6 AM! YES, 6 AM!!”

Oy, life was so easy then. Going from one to two is, like, totally kicking my ASS, people, and unfortunately you are going to have to suffer the transition along with me, if you keep coming here.

You can’t say I didn’t warn you.

Today I’m not focused on me, though. I’m too pissed off. Pissed off that so many of my friends are losing their jobs, and are in danger of losing their homes.

Pissed off that their kids are eating food bought with government assistance, while they look for jobs they can’t get. These are talented, qualified, educated, thoughtful human beings whose lives are being—let’s be frank—TOTALLY FUCKED WITH by our TOTALLY FUCKED UP FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS and the TOTALLY FUCKED UP GOVERNMENT.

I, myself, am just a hair’s breadth away from financial disaster. If my husband doesn’t get a job for the fall, we have no guaranteed income and no health insurance. As it is, right now we rely on the generosity of others whose financial stability relies on the market conditions.

Which, if you haven’t noticed, are TOTALLY FUCKED UP.

Are you sensing a theme?

I’m pissed off. And I’m afraid. And I’m sad. Why are these people, these stupid, stupid people, who doled out unrealistic mortgages to people who couldn’t, in a million years, make the payments without their jobs, getting bailed out?

Where the hell is MY bail out?

As usual, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. That should be out new national slogan.

Only now, the middle is getting poorer, too.

Thank you, Mister Bush, for helping to sink ALL the boats.

So enough about me. Go visit Jennifer and Christina and Jen and Deb, who are all just like me and you: educated, intelligent and hard-working.

They are struggling right now. So lend your ears, and then take their voices into the voting booth with you.

The polls are too close for comfort.

Please, I’m begging you.

Vote.

Do you ever think about how much food you waste?
I do.
And when I hear facts like these about the Eastern Illinois Foodbank, I feel even worse:

While the Foodbank distributed 5 million pounds of food to agencies and programs in its 14-county service area in 2006, the actual need is closer to 20 million pounds.

There are so many hungry people in my local area that the food bank, despite its valiant efforts, cannot meet the needs of all those whose bellies go empty at night.

I think about my daughter, and her little round tummy, asking for a banana. She gets one each and every time she asks. Because I know that she likes them, I make sure we have them in the house.

And that I am able to do so is a luxury in this country.

Can you imagine? To so many people, a simple banana – priced around 79-cents a pound in my neck of the woods – is a luxury. In this wealthy country.

Disgusting. Shameful.

The worst part, the fact that strikes me in the dead-center of my mother-heart, is the fact that 40 percent of the households served by the Eastern Illinois Foodbank include children under the age of 18.

Somewhere close, maybe down the street, a small girl just The Poo’s age has a hollow belly and will go to bed hungry tonight.

For this reason and so many more, I am joining forces with some other local bloggers to ask for help.

The 2007 “Food For Families” drive runs from Oct 14-27, and this year’s goal is to raise $65,000 and collect 190,000 pounds of food. Did you know that for every dollar donated, the food bank can acquire, store and distribute $10 worth of food?

If you are a reader who lives in the Chambana area, I ask you to please consider donating canned goods or cash to this very worthy effort. Canned goods (meat, fish, veggies and fruit), as well as boxed dinners, are excellent donation items. Monetary donations are also welcome. For more information, visit the food bank here.

And because everybody eats, I urge you to enter your zip code here to find your area’s food bank. Hunger is not limited to my small patch of land. And if you need any more reasons to put food in the mouth of a hungry child, please read this moving post by Jen at One Plus Two.

Jen, who works so hard to combat the ills of homelessness and hunger, writes:

An estimated 35 million Americans are food insecure with food insecurity and the necessity of food stamps being experienced by at least 4 in 10 Americans between the ages of 20 and 65. That’s 50% of Americans!

Meanwhile, the already burdened food safety-net program which was designed to alleviate hunger and food insecurity is under attack by the threat of reduction of funding and ease of enrollment by policy makers.

With food expenses being the most elastic part of a family’s budget, as limited funds usually get allocated to fixed payments first, such as rent and utilities, food purchasing has become the most compromised portion of the average family’s budget. So far in 2004, 35% of Americans have had to choose between food and rent, while 28% had to choose between medical care and food. While others, forced to stretch their budgets further and further, are buying less expensive but often less nutritious food.

It is wonderful to be involved in the political process on a national level, and it is especially important in this upcoming presidential election.

But I ask you, please, to remember that all politics are local. Taking action in our own communities is equally important. If you can spare a $10 or five boxes of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, you can be part of the solution to one of the most intractable problems in our nation: poverty.

Imagine the difference that could make for one hungry child.
